Four Tips for Dealing with Sore Gums

Posted on 3/13/2016 by Leslie Davis
A woman suffering from sore gums!Sore gums can result from a variety of causes. While children often experience them when they are getting a new tooth in, other causes as an adult can include gum disease, food being lodged in between the gums and the teeth, and cavities. When you experience sore gums, there are a few things that you can do to help relieve your discomfort.

Cool Them Off

Eating cold foods like a popsicle can be helpful in numbing the gums and making them feel better on a short-term basis. This can also help with inflammation and swelling. When your gums start to bother you, stocking up your freezer with cold items can provide you with a lot of relief.

Apply a Topical Cream

Topical benzocaine cream can be applied to your gums to help with pain and discomfort by numbing the gums. It can be helpful to use this cream before you eat, just make sure that you don't swallow any of it. Try to find ointment varieties that are specifically made to go inside of your mouth.

Control Your Pain

If you need more help at relieving your gums, try ibuprofen, Tylenol, or another over the counter pain medication. These medications work to block pain receptors and to relieve inflammation.

Visit the Dentist

If you experience chronic sore gums, you should be sure to visit your dentist. You may be developing gum disease, and a cleaning might be needed to remove plaque and tartar build-up.

A nutritional deficiency might also be at play, and the only way to definitively know what is going on in your mouth is to have your dentist take a look.

Taking care of your teeth is one of the best ways that you can protect your mouth from sore gums. Your periodic dental appointments will check for problems and will also provide guidance on how you can better care for your mouth to protect against soreness and discomfort.

Please contact us if you have any question about your sore gums.

excellent care and attention

Once again, I want to thank you for all the excellent care and attention you so masterfully extended to me last year. I walked in terrified, with a tooth falling out, and left after wonderful treatment- better educated and with a transplant and confidence.

I have highly recommended you to my family and friends and join your many fans and satisfied patients.
