How to Treat Your Peri-Implantitis

Posted on 5/25/2016 by Leslie Davis
A woman in pain suffering from Peri-Implantitis.Peri-implantitis is a complication that sometimes - but rarely - results from dental implants, especially when patients practice poor oral hygiene, smoke, or have diabetes.

This problem can cause destruction to the gum and bone tissue, resulting in part of the implant being exposed. This can cause instability with the dental implant, and if this problem results, you'll need to get treatment right away.

Treating Peri-Implantitis with Mechanical Debridement

One of the most common treatment options for peri-implantitis is mechanical debridement, which is a processional cleaning using specialized instruments.

Dental implants need special tools for cleanings, including graphite, gold-tipped, or plastic instruments. The goal of cleaning the implant is to remove bacteria and debris without damaging the exterior coating of the implant.

Emdogain

If bone has been lost around the dental implant, bone regrowth factors like Emdogain might be used. If Emdogain is placed with bone grafting material along the affected tooth, new bone growth could be stimulated.

Perioscope

A perioscope is a microscope-guided cleaning that takes place deep below the gum tissue in order to remove debris and possible cement residue.

Localized Medication Delivery

Dental implant surfaces are rough, so removing infection from them can be hard with hand tools alone. For this reason, chemical antimicrobials might be used along with handheld instruments.

Studies have shown that combining these instruments with chemical agents are effective at eliminating peri-implantitis while it is in its early stages.

Some of the most common medications used include oral antibiotics like minocycline, arestin, and tetracycline. A chlorhexidine rinse could also be useful in cleaning up the infection.

Fortunately, dental implants do have an extremely high success rate, so there is a good chance you'll never have to worry about this problem if you pursue implants.

Once again, I want to thank you for all the excellent care and attention you so masterfully extended to me last year. I walked in terrified, with a tooth falling out, and left after wonderful treatment- better educated and with a transplant and confidence.

I have highly recommended you to my family and friends and join your many fans and satisfied patients.
