If you are considering dental implants, you may also need a bone graft before the dental implant procedure.
Bone grafts can be an important step in the successful attachment of dental implants to your jaw.
What Is a Bone Graft?
A dental bone graft is a procedure where a piece of bone tissue is removed from a bone with a lot of mass and anchored to the part of your jaw that needs to grow more bone. The bone graft material can be taken from:
•
Your own bone.
•
Sterilized bones of human cadavers or cows
•
Synthetic bone
Once the small piece of bone material is retrieved, it is anchored to the jaw using small screws. When the bone has been attached, a period of time must pass so the grafted bone can fuse to your existing bone. This time can vary and will be determined by regular follow-ups after the procedure.
Why Would I Need a Bone Graft?
The main reason for a bone graft is to treat bone loss. If you have been missing a tooth for a while, you could have a lot of jawbone loss around the area where the tooth used to be.
In order to treat any missing teeth with dental implants, your jaw needs enough mass so that the dental implants can be anchored to the bone. This allows the implant to stay in place and support the use of the new tooth.
What Causes Bone Loss?
There are several causes for bone loss, which might result in you needing a bone graft for a future procedure:
•
Missing teeth
•
Gum disease
•
Cavities
•
Smoking
•
Dentures
•
Misaligned bite
Some of these factors need to be considered once you have dental implants in place. Even after a successful bone graft and dental implant procedure, you will need to keep up your dental care to minimize bone loss to make sure your implant stays in place.
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.
excellent care and attention
Once again, I want to thank you for all the excellent care and attention you so masterfully extended to me last year. I walked in terrified, with a tooth falling out, and left after wonderful treatment- better educated and with a transplant and confidence.
I have highly recommended you to my family and friends and join your many fans and satisfied patients.
