Tooth Sensitivity and How to Stop It

Posted on 9/13/2016 by Leslie Davis
A woman in pain from a sensitive tooth. Are you experiencing tooth sensitivity?

Nothing is quite as irritating and shocking as taking a sip of a cold drink and feeling the echoes of chill ring through your teeth and through your whole head.

It's like a brain freeze for your teeth! Fortunately, there are a few good fixes that we can recommend to combat it.

Common Issues

Possible causes of tooth sensitivity include:

•  Chipped/cracked teeth
•  Tooth decay
•  Lost or worn fillings
•  Gum disease
•  Receding gums
•  Worn enamel

All of these can be the source of sensitive teeth, so you will want to call us at (623) 584-0664 to schedule an appointment so that we can diagnose your particular issue.

What Role Your Gums Play

Enamel is essentially what protects your teeth from temperature sensitivity. When the enamel on your teeth wears away you may experience sensitivity issues. What many people don't realize is only the crowns of your teeth have enamel on them, the roots do not.

When your gums recede due to gum disease, the dentin (the sensitive layer of the tooth) is exposed to all the things that you eat and drink.

Fixes

If your teeth are sensitive due to enamel loss it would be a good idea to start using toothpastes specially designed for sensitive teeth.

They are infused with compounds that are able to block the sensation of temperature from the tooth to the nerve within.

If we find that you have gum recession, we can prescribe a treatment plan for you based on what is exactly going on in your mouth.

If we believe that a good cleaning can help to treat the problem, we will set you up with a deep cleaning appointment. If something like a gum graft is needed to bring your gums back to good health, we can certainly help there too.

Please contact us today if you have any questions about your sensitive teeth.
